Stoppage on Leeds & Liverpool Canal

On 9th May 2011, British Waterways announced a closure of Lock 77 on the Wigan Flight of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal until further notice.

On 13th May they updated this:

"Whilst attempting to undertake repairs to the damaged cill, it has become apparent that there is significant structural failure to the lock floor below the tail gates. Our engineering teams are working to find a solution to repair the lock."

On 18th May:

"Following inspections by British Waterways’ structural engineers, it has been confirmed that the lock floor around the tail gates requires strengthening prior to reconstruction on the apron and cills.

A solution has now been designed and a specialist contractor has been appointed to work alongside British Waterways’ direct labour to deliver the works as swiftly as possible.

Winding is available above Lock 65 and at the junction with the Leigh Branch."
